The Premise

A closed-loop system of tradition and ego

Prestige-documentary command drama, played completely straight, for a naval captain who is not very good at his job.

Das Boatenstuffen plays maritime command as prestige documentary — the hushed narration, the reverence for procedure, the solemn treatment of a man who is, by any honest measure, not very good at his job. It is a high-fidelity character study of naval command, exploring the relationship between captain and vessel as a closed-loop system where tradition meets the raw, indifferent data of the ocean. The joke is never announced. It is simply that everyone on screen believes completely in the importance of what they are doing, and the ocean does not care.
